DataFinder
The Population Reference Bureau (PRB) provides a diverse range of information and products to audiences worldwide in an effort to educate and empower those looking to advance policy around population, health and environmental concerns. PRB’s initiatives are focused around the core issues of reproductive health and fertility, children and families, migration and urbanization, population and the environment, inequality and poverty, aging, global health and gender. In publishing unbiased reports and analysis, PRB ensures that advocates, journalists, students, educators and decision makers have access to factual evidence for research and advocacy initiatives.
Challenge
PRB engaged Velir to design and build DataFinder, a web-based solution to manage and display PRB’s enormous amount of data in a useful, intuitive way. DataFinder would require a flexible data architecture to show a large number of data points quickly in multiple views and had to feature a clear, easy navigation structure while looking consistent with PRB’s existing website branding.
Solution
Velir implemented Datacenter, Velir’s own data management system, in order to effectively manage PRB’s expansive data library. With capabilities including customizable dashboards, plug-ins and one click publishing, Datacenter easily integrated with Esri’s geographic information system (ArcGIS) to quickly view and share map-based trends and patterns. DataFinder seamlessly integrates with PRB’s flagship site, PRB.org, which is built on the Sitecore content management system (CMS) allowing for streamlined data sharing between the two sites.
Results
DataFinder engages visitors by providing multiple data views that extend across the vast collection of data housed within PRB’s archives. These new views include maps, stacked bar charts, trend charts and tables, allowing users to look at data in a variety of ways with the ability to easily print, download and share custom reports. Velir developers wrote a customized algorithm enabling data to be collected and mapped faster than previously possible, which has since become the industry standard for the most efficient method of loading data. DataFinder has allowed PRB to manage their datasets more effectively and efficiently, and has introduced a powerful new tool to inform people around the world about population, health and the environment.
