Overview

The California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF) is an independent philanthropy committed to improving the way healthcare is delivered and financed in California. CHCF turned to Velir Studios to build CalHospitalCompare.org, a Web site that enables healthcare consumers to choose the best hospital for them based on a variety of data—from mortality rates to patient satisfaction.

The project presented some tough challenges. The client needed to manage the site with a CMS, which is great for organizing pages of text, but not optimal for presenting raw data in a dynamic way, performing calculations, and pulling statistics from a database. To meet the client’s needs, Velir developed a solution that merged content management and data visualization elements. It features Sitecore CMS integration with multi-lingual content, dynamic PDF generation, and Web 2.0 features such as dynamic auto-complete and smart “auto-select” menus.

Visitors to CalHospitalCompare.org can now search the hospital database by location (county, city, or zip code), hospital name, or condition. Results are presented as a comparative display or as a single hospital profile—enabling users to customize and compare data that informs their crucial healthcare decisions.

Project Hero

“When we built this site, we knew that it would have a big impact—both on healthcare consumers and on the medical professionals at the hospitals being compared. I felt like I had an important responsibility because it is such a powerful tool.”
