Overview

The Foundation Center has been a leading authority on organized philanthropy for over 50 years, providing tools and resources for nonprofits and the grantmakers supporting them. To take these tools to the 21st century, The Foundation Center, in partnership with Velir, has launched Philanthropy In/Sight, a web-based application combining its rich data on grants and grantmakers with google maps.

The Web site features an immense amount of data – 1.8 millions grants, 97,000 grantmakers, 168,000 recipients, and other rich thematic and demographic data including health, income, and population statistics. Users can view the data on a map or table, save and print, and dynamically generate PDFs and Excel spreadsheets. To meet these requirements Velir used a variety of technologies and software including Google maps, Sybase, MS SQL Server, Telerik, Corda, Sharpmap, .NET, C#, Javascript, Actionscript, and Flash.

The resulting Web site gives Insight users unparalleled access to the Foundation Center’s data on philanthropy, with many ways to view and analyze the information. Philanthropy In/Sight administrators are now able to take a hands-off approach—they just enter the data in the database and the Insight application does the rest.
