State Health Facts
Overview
Take a staggering amount of data and display it in creative, intuitive, and user-friendly formats. That was Kaiser’s goal. They needed to develop a Web-based application that would give policy researchers, the academic community, journalists, and the global health community robust access to a wide range of state-level health information.
Velir brought Kaiser's vision to life in the form of a highly dynamic system that allows users to view, sort, and print data according to their unique needs. In late 2004, we relaunched the site with a new design and enhanced scripts; in 2007 we took it to the next level with a CSS layout and significant changes to the back-end code.
Today, the site provides comparable data on more than 600 key health topics for the United States, each individual state, and the District of Columbia. The data are displayed in easy-to-read tables, line graphs, and color-coded maps and can be downloaded for custom analyses. Users can also compare states across a selection of key Medicaid and children's health indicators to create customized fact sheets, which can be easily printed, emailed, or saved. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes to make that happen. But all users see is what they want, the way they want it.

"At my old job I coded pension calculations. This site provides free, beneficial health information to people who need it. It’s not just a good site – it’s good for the world. That’s pretty cool."
